Connecting Google

Connect Search Console and Google Analytics so Cleo can see how people find your site.

Updated

Cleo can see a lot just by looking at your site, but she can't see what happens in Google. She doesn't know which searches you appear for, which pages are slowly slipping, or which ones are just short of the first page. Google knows all of that, and connecting your Google accounts lets Cleo read it.

There are two Google services to connect:

  • Google Search Console shows how your site appears in Google search: the searches people type, how often you come up, and how often they click.
  • Google Analytics 4 shows what visitors do once they arrive on your site.

If you don't use these yet, they're both free from Google. Many web designers set them up when the site is built, so it's worth checking whether you already have them before creating new ones.

Is It Safe?

Yes. The connection is read-only. Presstack can look at your figures, but it can never change anything in your Google account. You can also disconnect at any time, and the access is removed at Google's end too.

Connect Search Console And Analytics

  1. In Presstack, open Connections in the left-hand menu.
  2. Open the Google section. You'll see two cards: Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4.
  3. On Google Search Console, press Connect Via OAuth →.
  4. Google opens its usual sign-in page. Sign in with the Google account that owns your Search Console, and press allow when it asks.
  5. You'll come back to Presstack. Press Choose property → and pick your site from the list.
  6. Do the same on the Google Analytics 4 card.

There are no keys or codes to copy anywhere. "OAuth" is just the name for the standard, secure "Sign in with Google" method that you've probably used on other websites.

Tip: In Google's terms, each website you've set up is called a property. If your site was added to Search Console as a whole domain, Presstack will usually match it for you, so you won't need to choose.

What The Badges Mean

Each card shows a small badge so you can tell where things stand.

BadgeWhat it meansWhat to do

Finish SetupYou've signed in, but haven't picked your site yet.Press Choose property →.

Reconnect NeededGoogle's access expired or was removed.Press Reconnect Now →.

Signed In With The Wrong Google Account?

It happens a lot, especially if you have a personal and a work Google account. Press Switch Google Account on the card and sign in with the right one. If you're on the right account but picked the wrong site, press Change property →.

If You Don't Connect Google

Presstack still works without it. The daily checks, the writing and the SEO all carry on as normal.

What you miss out on is Cleo's view of your search results. The Search Console findings stay empty, and the Getting Started step to submit your sitemap stays locked, because submitting a sitemap is something that happens in Search Console.

Disconnecting

You can disconnect from the same card whenever you like. Presstack stops reading your data straight away, and the access is removed at Google as well.
